Love On The Misty Isles

Summary:

Does love happen when you least expect it? Is falling in love only for the young? Can love overcome obstacles to a happily-ever-after?

Escaping the pain of lost love, Libby Campbell flees the Canadian prairies to teach high school on the former Queen Charlotte Islands off the northwest coast of Canada. Will the hunky pilot who brings her to the islands on “the Goose” teach her to love again?

Dr. Shirlee, owner of Books ’n’ Brew, serves up a side order of sage advice along with her lattes and scones. Why is a retired professor selling coffee and used books on these remote islands? When Shirlee comes face-to-face with her past, will she be open to a second chance at love?

A raven-haired beauty, the highly educated, enigmatic Willow Shaw is an expert on her Haida culture. Wounded deeply by disastrous experiences with love, she has vowed never to trust or love again. Will the new principal at the high school be able to break through her protective shell?

Along with their friends, these strong yet vulnerable women form a “family” that crosses cultures, generations, and borders. The rugged, pristine beauty of these Misty Isles forms the backdrop for this engaging trilogy. Officially named Haida Gwaii, the islands are home to the proud and talented Haida First Nation.

Raised on the Canadian prairies, Rosemary Vaughn immigrated with her family to the northern plains of the United States in the mid-1970s. Returning to her love of creative writing, this former professor has drawn on her experiences in education and living briefly on the islands to enhance the authenticity of her debut novel Love on the Misty Isles. Love on the Misty Isles kept me intrigued. You are a great storyteller! I felt each story takes the reader on this woven journey, and along the way you meet these incredible characters, all with unique backgrounds, yet all merged together on this lovely island. The stories were equally captivating because of how you interlaced the stories together using Dr. Shirlee’s Books and Brew as the common thread. Part III was extremely educational, as on the side, I went to my computer to learn more about this indigenous culture. And what a fascinating tribute to the Haida First Nation that I knew nothing about. Thanks so much for the introduction. Simply marvelous! Rosemary Vaughn, you have a fan. I await the next novel from you in the near future.”

I attended your presentation at Killarney Library. I was curious because I had never before attended an author’s reading and wondered how the presentation and your book would all tie together. I was not disappointed! I just finished reading “Love on the Misty Isles”! I thoroughly enjoyed the “journey to the Misty Isles” and all of the characters. I not only enjoyed reading it but really loved the way you tied all of the characters together! I also found I learned a lot about a beautiful part of Canada I have not yet visited and its people. The women and their stories seemed so real… I could relate to them and of course I was hoping that their love stories had a happy ending. Do hope you will write a sequel!

As the backstory of these main characters developed I found the intertwining of their stories engaging. Not often does a novel capture my interest in chapter one and hold it right to the end but Love on the Misty Isles certainly did. Thoroughly enjoyed this book and am putting Haida Gwaii on my bucket list. Would love to see a sequel.

An enjoyable and easy read of three love stories that show us what life is all about. It is about family, friends, loyalty, birth, death, forgiveness, and finding purpose for our lives. The importance of education weaves through all three stories as does the beautiful environment of the setting for the book. I enjoyed learning about the Haida people and culture as well. The book put me in mind of The Chronicles of Avonlea, part of the Anne of Green Gables series by Lucy Maud Montgomery because of it's day to day life experiences of people. There is a touch of sex to this book but it wasn't overdone and fit into the story.

  • Nice love stories with a lesson in Haida culture. Easy read.

This book has such a fantastic sense of place, that you really feel you are in this unique landscape and community. The interwoven and intergenerational stories make this book much more complex and real than the typical romance.
